Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff Members:
I wanted to provide some follow-up and clarification to the Board of Education meeting which was held yesterday. There appears to be significant confusion circulating in the community and on social media regarding the Board’s actions.
At the meeting yesterday, the Board took action on agenda item J.1
J.1 Approval of Montville Township Public Schools Reopening Plan - September 2020
RESOLVED, that the Montville Township Board of Education, based on the recommendation of the Superintendent and the District Reopening Committee, approve the Montville Township Public Schools Reopening Plan - September 2020.
This resolution was ultimately unanimously approved by all members of the Board of Education. The District Reopening Plan was approved and has been submitted to the New Jersey Department of Education for review.
During the meeting, a resolution was proposed by Mr. Michael O’Brien, Board member. In accordance with the rules for conduct of our Board meetings, Board members may present resolutions for consideration by the full Board. Such resolutions do not need to be published on the Board agenda in advance. The Board has the ability to discuss these resolutions and to take action on them if they so choose.
The resolution proposed by Mr. O’Brien was labeled as resolution J.2. As proposed, the resolution reads:
RESOLVED, that the Montville Township Board of Education supports legislative or executive action to delay the restart of in-person public education for the months of September and October 2020 and utilize virtual education.
This resolution was approved by a vote of 6-3.
This resolution supports proposed legislation suggested by Assemblywomen Mila Jassey, Pamela Lampitt, and Joann Downey to require remote instruction for New Jersey schools through October 31st.
I want to make sure that everyone understands that the J-2 resolution did not change the Board’s reopening plan. We still offer children the opportunity to attend school in person. At the present time the guidelines issued by the New Jersey Department of Education and the Governor do not permit a New Jersey School District to open in a purely virtual mode. The district plan requires in-person instruction at all grade levels, but gives parents the option of choosing full-time remote learning for their child(ren).
Please feel free to review the district plan and to access the Frequently Asked Questions document that is available on the district website at https://www.montvilletwpps.nj.schools.bz/Content2/1266.
Parents must make their selection of in-person or full-time remote attendance in the Genesis Parent Portal by August 12, 2020 at midnight (end of the day on August 12th). Any student without a parental selection in the Genesis Parent Portal will be scheduled as an in-person student.
René T. Rovtar, Ed.D.
