Superintendent's Letter Regarding Lazar Social Media Threat

March 24, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians and Staff,

This morning, March 24, 2023, prior to the start of school, an anonymous threat was made on social media regarding Robert R. Lazar Middle School. The Montville Township Police were immediately notified. Law enforcement quickly identified the threat and secured the building.

Out of an abundance of caution, students were admitted to the building one by one and all backpacks were searched.

Following the search, students were gathered in the gymnasium and cafeteria as they normally do before the start of school. Once all students had entered the building safely, they then proceeded to homeroom before beginning the regular school day activities. Counselors and staff are on hand for any students that may seek assistance.

The Montville Township Police Department has stated that the threat does not appear to be credible. This incident is under investigation by law enforcement.

I am proud of how the students, staff, and police handled the situation. Many measures are in place to ensure the safety of the students and staff. The faculty and staff were outstanding in handling this situation.

I want to thank the Montville Township Police Department, Morris County Sheriff's Department, and other local law enforcement departments for their quick response and cooperation. Together, we are working to ensure the safety of all students and staff of Montville Township Public Schools.

Respectfully,

Thomas A. Gorman, Ed.D.
Superintendent of Schools
