Tom Bury
Tom graduated from Montville Township High School in 1996 then went on to attend NJIT, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a Master’s degree in construction management in 2002. Armed with an education in architecture and construction management, a background in real world building and an incredible eye for detail, Tom was immediately swept up by a number of architecture and design firms following graduation. After spending several years behind a desk however, Tom realized his strength in the field as a building and project manager and an ability to fill a gap within the design and construction industry. His knowledge of architecture and understanding of space, paired with an ability to personally and flawlessly execute his visions, deemed him invaluable. With newfound knowledge, ability and passion, Tom partnered with NJIT classmates to open their own company, Division 9 Design and Construction. The company thrived within the restaurant industry as owners quickly realized that Tom and his team were able to not only ideate their space, but execute it as well. Eventually it was not just restaurants that noticed Tom. When a new series on Food Network was casting for restaurant designers and builders, Tom and Division 9 Design and Construction had been enlisted by fellow designers to do the build. The TV series Restaurant Impossible quickly took off and Tom’s character as “Tom the Builder” was secured. Marc Summers, the show’s Executive Producer, called Bury “the best [casting] find ever” and crucial to the program’s success. Tom’s reputation as an expert restaurant designed and builder flourished and Tom himself could add another strength to his growing résumé – the ability to think outside the box to successfully build a restaurant in under 2 days and $10,000. In 2016 the show wrapped after 13 seasons and over 150 restaurants, all of which Tom and his team built. The show gave the company a great deal of exposure and today Division 9 Design and Construction has expanded to cover New York City, New Jersey and Philadelphia.
